1 Central Asheville
This diverse area includes downtown Asheville, Montford and the Broadway Corridor, also known as Five Points.
Downtown Asheville is a vibrant city hub, replete with cafes, restaurants, nightclubs, brew-pubs, galleries, shops and condos. It boasts some of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture east of the Mississippi, as well buildings of elegant Neoclassical and Romanesque Revival design.
The Montford district north of Broadway and circumscribed by Route 19/23 and Interstate 240, began development in the 1890’s and was nurtured by one of Asheville’s early benefactors, George Pack, who also built Asheville’s public library and public square. Highland Hospital on Montford Avenue was the location of the tragic 1948 fire that took the life of Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of famed novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Designated as a Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places, Montford is an eclectic mix of Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Georgian style homes with an occasional Greek Revival and Italianate structure thrown into the mix. It’s also home to some charming bungalows and apartment buildings. Several of the area’s grander homes are now Bed and Breakfast inns.
Asheville’s Broadway Corridor and Five Points area is a great mix of fine and funky. It consists mostly of 1920’s and 30’s vintage bungalow style homes and is currently undergoing a major renewal effort. (compliments of AshevilleNewcomers.com) Click for more about Asheville
